Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta has urged the Premier League to expand matchday squad sizes. He publicly requested the league permit 23 players, an increase from the current 20, for each fixture. Arteta made these comments on Thursday, January 30, 2026, citing player welfare concerns.
The Spaniard stated that a larger squad would help preserve player "value and mental health". He also believes it would allow managers to better manage player minutes and provide greater flexibility amidst a demanding fixture schedule. Arteta highlighted the difficulty of leaving out players, even recent signings, from the matchday selection.
Currently, Premier League clubs can name nine substitutes, with five allowed to be introduced during a game. Arteta pointed out that the Champions League already permits 23 players in its matchday squads, suggesting the Premier League should follow this example for the upcoming season. He emphasised the need to adapt to the evolving nature of modern football, which includes increasingly packed schedules.
