Chelsea Women's WSL Title Defence Falters

Football

Chelsea Women are 9 points behind the WSL leaders, a significant drop from their unbeaten domestic treble last season.

Chelsea Women currently sit second in the Women's Super League, 9 points adrift of Manchester City Women, after 13 games this season. This marks a notable decline from their dominant 2024-25 campaign, where they secured an unbeaten domestic treble and finished 12 points clear at the top.

A key issue has been goalscoring, with the team netting 24 goals in 13 WSL matches, a lower output compared to previous seasons. Their shot accuracy and conversion rate have also decreased. Manager Sonia Bompastor previously noted a lack of consistency despite trophy wins last season.

The club's 34-game unbeaten WSL run ended with a defeat to Everton, followed by a 1-5 loss against Manchester City on 1 February 2026. Draws against Arsenal, Manchester United, and Liverpool have also contributed to dropped points. Injuries to key players, including Nathalie Björn, Kadeisha Buchanan, Aggie Beever-Jones, and Mayra Ramírez, have further hampered the squad. Significant summer departures also saw Ashley Lawrence and Mia Fishel leave the club.
