Manchester City centre-back Marc Guehi is ineligible to feature in the Carabao Cup final against Arsenal on March 22. Guehi joined City from Crystal Palace on January 19 for £20 million, six days after the first leg of the semi-final on January 13.
EFL rules state that a player can represent two clubs in the competition if signed before the semi-final first leg or the winter transfer window closure, whichever is sooner. This rule was a change for the current season, allowing players to feature for two teams.
City manager Pep Guardiola expressed his frustration, stating it is "difficult to understand" why a player acquired through a "big investment" cannot play. He confirmed the club would formally request the EFL to amend the rule. However, the EFL has indicated no rule changes will occur. Other January signings, such as Antoine Semenyo, are eligible as their transfers were completed before the semi-final first leg.
