Kelleher: Jota's death overshadows Liverpool season

Former Liverpool goalkeeper Caoimhin Kelleher believes the club's current season is less important following Diogo Jota's tragic death.

Caoimhin Kelleher, the former Liverpool goalkeeper, stated that performances and results at his old club are not as important this season. He believes the squad remains in mourning after the death of Diogo Jota last summer. Kelleher, who joined Brentford, found criticism of Liverpool's current campaign "strange" given the circumstances.

Portuguese forward Diogo Jota, aged 28, died in a car crash in early July 2025, alongside his brother Andre Silva. The incident occurred in Spain as they travelled back to the United Kingdom for pre-season preparations. Jota had married his long-term partner just weeks before his death.

Liverpool Football Club expressed devastation at the time, lowering flags to half-mast and offering support to staff. Kelleher suggested the season should be viewed more for personal and mental well-being than footballing achievements.
