Late Goals Plague Liverpool's Premier League Campaign

Football

Liverpool's season is being undermined by a recurring pattern of conceding crucial late goals, impacting their Premier League standing.

Liverpool suffered a 2-1 defeat to Manchester City at Anfield on February 8, 2026, after leading 1-0. Bernardo Silva and Erling Haaland scored for City, with Haaland's winner coming from a 93rd-minute penalty. This marked the latest Liverpool had ever been ahead in a Premier League home game and still lost.

Manager Arne Slot stated the team is "almost getting used to conceding a goal in extra time". The club has conceded six goals after the 90th minute in the Premier League this season, all leading to defeats or draws. Four of these were winning goals conceded in the 90th minute, a joint-highest figure for any team in a single Premier League campaign.

This trend contrasts with earlier in the season when Liverpool often scored late goals to secure victories. The dropped points leave Liverpool sixth in the Premier League table, five points behind Manchester United in fourth place.
