Playmaker Elliott's Loan Stalls at Aston Villa

Liverpool midfielder Harvey Elliott faces an uncertain future at Aston Villa, where a £35m buy clause complicates his loan spell.

Harvey Elliott, on loan from Liverpool, faces an uncertain future at Aston Villa. The midfielder joined Villa in summer 2025 on a season-long deal which includes a £35 million obligation to buy clause if he makes ten appearances. However, Elliott has struggled for game time under manager Unai Emery, featuring in only seven matches by early February 2026.

Emery has publicly stated Aston Villa are "not convinced" to make the move permanent, aiming to avoid triggering the significant transfer fee. Consequently, Elliott was largely sidelined from October until a recent injury crisis at Villa Park provided him with more opportunities.

Liverpool did not include a mid-season recall clause in the agreement, and reportedly did not seek to bring him back in January. Both clubs are now in discussions to revise the loan terms, potentially altering the appearance target or converting the obligation to an option, to ensure Elliott gains more playing experience. FIFA rules prevent him from playing for a third European club this season.
