THE VIDIPRINTER
GOAL! Those yellow letters scrolling across the screen, accompanied by the satisfying chatter of results coming through. The Vidiprinter was Saturday afternoon television at its finest.
WHAT WAS IT?
The Vidiprinter was a ticker-tape style display showing football results as they came in. Used on BBC's Grandstand and Final Score, it created one of sport's most iconic visual experiences - watching scores appear letter by letter.
THE RITUAL
Fans would gather around the TV, eyes fixed on the printer. When your team's name appeared, tension mounted. Was it a goal for or against? The agonising wait as the score slowly revealed itself was part of the magic.
THE SOUNDS
The mechanical clatter of the teleprinter became synonymous with Saturday football. It was the sound of goals happening across the country, filtered through one magnificent machine. Pure ASMR before ASMR was a thing.
